J'ai commencé par faire de l’action painting, mais mon travail a toujours eu une structure de base. J'ai étudié avec Fritz Bultman, puis avec George Sugarman, et j'ai commencé à faire des pièces en relief qui ont débouché sur des œuvres plus hard-edge et minimales, qui ont finalement évolué vers des œuvres conceptuelles — on pourrait dire, minimales et conceptuelles — et qui n'ont cessé de se réduire. J'ai toujours pensé à partir d'une formation scientifique. Je pense qu'il y avait toujours un élément de méthode scientifique dans ce que je faisais, certainement dans le travail structurel minimal. J'étais souvent en train de faire des expériences : « Et si, et si je faisais ceci, ou si je peignais autour des bords, ou et si c'était tout blanc, ou tout noir ou quoi que ce soit d’autre ?  (…)
Quand j'étais plus jeune et que je vivais à New York, je n'étais pas pressé d'exposer. Je voulais le respect de mes pairs et je travaillais dur pour être au niveau de ceux qui faisaient bouger les choses à l'époque. Je voulais être leur pair, je voulais leur respect, je ne pensais pas beaucoup à la réussite financière. Le succès pour moi était d'avoir le respect de mes pairs. (…)

“I’ve been somewhat of an action painter but always had a basic structure to it. And you know, I studied with Bultman and then with Sugarman and I started making relief pieces which led into the more “Hard-edge Minimal work” which evolved eventually into Conceptual, we might say, Minimal and Conceptual, and then it would keep reducing, I was always thinking about, you know, I don’t know, a Science background. I think that there was always kind of an element of scientific method in what I did, certainly in the Minimal structural work. You know I was often kind of like experimenting, “What if, what if I did this, what if I painted around the edges, what if it was all white or black or whatever.” (…)
“And when I was younger, first showing in New York, I was in no rush to show, I wanted the respect of my peers, and I worked really hard and be on the level of those who were the ones who were the movers and shakers at the time that I wanted to be their peers, I wanted their respect, I didn’t really think much about being monetarily successful. Success for me had to have the respect of my peers.” (…)
